Pain Management (Pain Medicine) Definition

Pain management, also known as pain medicine, provides a range of treatment approaches to help people living with chronic pain lead more enjoyable lives. Most pain management treatments fall into one of three categories: noninvasive non-drug pain management (physical therapy, chiropractic, electrotherapy, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, or massage), noninvasive pharmacologic pain management (medications such as NSAIDs, narcotics, muscle relaxants), or interventional pain management (injections, surgically implanted devices, and others). It is important to remember that surgical treatment is generally viewed separately from pain management.
